Mary Akpovi traveled to Sierra Leone, West Africa in mid-October, 2013 with a team of doctors, dentists and nurses to participate in a free medical clinic under the leadership of Kevin White, MD and Community Presbyterian Church of Ventura. This team often collaborates with Dr. Bob Hamilton of The Lighthouse Medical Missions of Santa Monica. This team was truly international and had participants from the US, Canada, Albanian, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The hosts were Ed and Rita Saffa, pastors of The Door Christian Fellowship in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The team treated and dispensed medication to about 3,000 individuals, many of whom also had dental work done.
The team also visited Godwin Vocational Training Center, which was established, by Mary and her supporters, in 2011 in honor of her late father, Godwin, who believed strongly in empowering women with life sustaining skills.
